Ok, I repent. I basically agree with you and Raymond. Unfortunately
I'm not the sysadmin of the machines I've installed TeX on, and he
has expressed concern with letting joe_user write pk files. There is
always some idiot around (usually several) who will have TeX do
something ridiculous with a font and wind up creating huge pk files
which fill up the filesystem.
Let's say I continue allowing the pk files to be automatically generated.
How can I at least have them dropped in a directory correlated to the mf
source directory rather than .../fonts/tmp/pk/ljfour; for example
fonts/ams/extracm/src/cmex7.mf --> fonts/ams/extracm/pk/ljfour/cmex7.300pk.
Does this have something to do with .../texmf/fontname? I can't find this
file in the distribution; what is its format?
Thanks,
